Five Dublin level crossings could close under DART+ plans

Five level crossings in south Dublin could close as part of plans to expand the DART network.
The five locations affected are Lansdowne Road, Serpentine Avenue, Sandymount Avenue, Sydney Parade Avenue and Merrion Gates.
The changes are part of the wider DART+ Coastal South plans, which aim to increase the number of DART services operating along the line.
Changes planned for Merrion Gates
At Merrion Gates, the plans propose building an underpass for vehicles north of the existing crossing, providing an alternative route for traffic.
The other four crossings would be permanently closed to vehicles, with pedestrian and cycle crossings proposed as alternatives.
The changes could also help reduce delays for DART passengers, as the crossings currently have to close when trains approach.
Changes not expected until 2030
The closures are not expected to happen immediately. Iarnród Éireann has said the part of DART+ Coastal South involving the level crossings is unlikely to progress until 2030 at the earliest.
The proposals have not yet gone through public consultation.
The wider DART+ programme aims to significantly increase the capacity of Dublin's rail network and allow more frequent services across the Greater Dublin Area.
