Rory Gaffney retires from football at 36

Shamrock Rovers striker Rory Gaffney has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36, bringing an end to a successful six year spell with the club.
Gaffney leaves Rovers having won five league titles and scored 50 goals across the league, FAI Cup and European competitions.
His final season with the Hoops ended with a memorable FAI Cup final performance, as he scored both goals in the final to help Shamrock Rovers secure the trophy and complete their first domestic double since 1987.
Six seasons with Shamrock Rovers
Gaffney joined Shamrock Rovers in 2020 after previously playing in England with Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers, Salford City and Walsall.
He went on to become an important part of one of the most successful periods in the club's recent history.
The striker scored 37 league goals in 143 appearances for Rovers and helped the club win five league titles during his time at Tallaght Stadium.
Gaffney also scored eight European goals for the club, putting him fifth on Shamrock Rovers' all time list of European goalscorers.
His best individual season came in 2022, when he scored 15 goals in all competitions and was named both Shamrock Rovers Player of the Year and League of Ireland Player of the Year.
Gaffney thanks Rovers supporters
In a statement announcing his retirement, Gaffney thanked the club, staff, teammates and supporters for their backing throughout his time with Shamrock Rovers.
He said his time at the club had been a highlight of his career and that he would look back on his years at Rovers with great pride.
Gaffney now leaves Shamrock Rovers as a five time league champion and FAI Cup winner, having played a major role in one of the most successful eras in the club's history.
