Tragedy Strikes Rugby World as Lions Player Passes Away in France Ahead of Champions Cup Match

A member of the Johannesburg Lions squad has died at the team’s hotel in western France, with the South African rugby community left mourning the loss.
The squad was staying at the Hôtel Atalante on Île de Ré ahead of their opening European Champions Cup fixture against Stade Rochelais.
Emergency services were called to the hotel at around 10:20am on Friday morning after reports that a player in his thirties was unresponsive. Paramedics performed CPR at the scene, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful following a suspected cardiac arrest.
The player's identity has not been released out of respect for his family.
Support services were made available at the hotel for teammates, coaches and staff affected by the incident.
Tournament organisers are expected to postpone Saturday's fixture as both clubs deal with the tragedy.
