12 year old boy dies after train collision in Mayo

A 12 year old boy has died following a collision between a train and a car in Kiltybo, near Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, on Thursday evening, 3 September.
The collision happened at a user operated level crossing shortly before 9pm.
The boy was a passenger in the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A man in his late 40s, who was driving the car, was taken to hospital by ambulance. His injuries are described as not life threatening.
The train involved was the 6.15pm Iarnród Éireann service from Dublin Heuston to Westport.
All passengers on the train safely disembarked and onward transport was arranged.
Garda investigation
Gardaí are carrying out a technical examination of the scene, with forensic collision investigators involved.
The coroner has been notified and a postmortem examination will be arranged.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and are seeking dashcam or other camera footage from the Kiltybo area between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on Thursday.
Rail disruption
The Westport to Athlone rail line remains closed until further notice, according to Iarnród Éireann.
Replacement buses are operating between Westport and Athlone. Ballina to Manulla services are operating to Claremorris, with onward bus transfers in place.
