"We Are Heartbroken": Lions Lock Hyron Andrews Dies in France Ahead of European Opener
South African rugby is reeling today following the sudden death of Lions lock Hyron Andrews while the team was on tour in France.
The 10bet Lions squad were based at the Hôtel Atalante on the Île de Ré, getting ready to face Stade Rochelais in their opening Investec Champions Cup clash. Emergency crews hurried to the hotel on Friday morning when the former Sharks and Sale Sharks forward was found unresponsive. Paramedics tried desperately to revive him, but he couldn't be saved following a suspected cardiac arrest.
Confirming the worst, Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli shared a statement from the franchise.
"We are heartbroken by the passing of Hyron," Straeuli said, emphasizing that he had quickly become a cherished part of the Lions family after joining this season. He extended deepest sympathies to Andrews' wife, Maiglin, and young sons, Hendrix and Emerson, on behalf of chairman Altmann Allers and the board.
Hotel staff brought in grief support for the shaken players and team personnel. In a brave decision, the Lions announced they will still go ahead with Saturday evening's match against La Rochelle at 18:30 South African time, taking the pitch specifically to honor Hyron.
